Amid Oklahoma’s concerning mental health statistics, a beacon of hope emerges from the heart of Edmond. Founded in 2015 by Chad Richison, the Green Shoe Foundation began in south Edmond. It has already impacted the lives of people nationwide, providing a transformative experience for adults grappling with childhood relational trauma.

Expanding their reach

Recently, the group moved to a sprawling 415-acre property in Guthrie, so they can provide even more group spots for those who are struggling. The foundation provides an intensive five-day outpatient program free of charge. Focusing on the aftermath of less-than-nurturing childhood experiences, the program delves deep into how family roles and dynamics shape adult behaviors and relationships using the

“We’re here to help individuals reflect, heal, and aim for a healthier, authentic life,” says Stephany Cochran, the Foundation’s Executive Director.

This sentiment is especially vital given Oklahoma’s mental health landscape. The state ranks 5th in the nation for rates of any mental illness, with a staggering 25.6% of the population affected. Between 700,000 and 950,000 adult Oklahomans need services, with many not accessing the care required for full recovery. In FY21 alone, approximately 180,000 Oklahomans sought assistance from ODMHSAS services.

With the recent relocation to a state-of-the-art facility boasting three buildings and 10,000 square feet, Green Shoe Foundation can now offer its life-changing programs to even more residents. The new facility, designed with therapeutic intent, includes six group rooms, an atrium, and an education building. The retreat’s outdoor space, featuring meditation labyrinths and tranquil ponds, provides participants with an environment conducive to reflection and healing.

A personal journey of transformation

The foundation’s inception stemmed from a deeply personal experience. Chad Richison, its founder, underwent a life-altering program that propelled him to establish Green Shoe, ensuring that others could benefit from similar transformative experiences.

While they’ve already accomplished so much, the foundation’s journey has only just begun. “We’ve had siblings, spouses, parents, and children attend at different times,” Cochran shares. “This isn’t just about changing individual lives. We aim to shift entire family systems.”

For those eager to make a difference, supporting the Green Shoe Foundation is straightforward. Cochran emphasizes the importance of mental health awareness and encourages Edmonites to share the foundation’s resources. The ripple effect of this support can have profound implications for the future.
